CTW Lent series talk 4 - Light of the World

The fourth of the 2008 CTW Lent meetings was led by Rev. Jim Graham (Gold Hill Baptist Church) with the theme of "Light of the World". The talk was based on a number of verses from Matthew 4. Jim started by reflecting on the incredible growth of the Church in China and his own experience in the far east. This is a church which is very much being the Light to the World. In our county we are not in a good position, politically, socially and economically. Christians have a real mission in our own society. We can make a difference and must no duck and let our society fall further into darkness. His talk was split into two parts. Part 1: 'The Provision of God' which said that we must focus of the Bible. Jesus said that WE are the Light but only through Jesus coming to live within us, The cross is the focus and the fruits of the spirit, God had given to us. How often are we running on dry, on an empty tank. We need to revitalise our faith through the spirit filling us. We can't fill up our own tank, only Jesus can. At Easter we can focus on what life is really all about. Jesus did not feed the 5000 his disciples did with what Jesus gave them. Part 2: 'The Programme of God' In Mat 6 Jesus is teaching absolute facts, not interesting stories ort compromised positions. Jesus called us 'the salt', not someone else. Jesus said we are the Light. Light exposes the dirt but it also energises good things. Let us be Light to or World through the power of Jesus.

CTW Lent series talk 3 - Armour and Light

he third of the 2008 CTW Lent meetings was led by the Rev. Andrew Marsden (St Sebastian’s, Wokingham) with the theme 'Armour and Light' which was based on Romans 13:11-14. The recording misses the first minute of the talk and in places it maybe distorted. The talk had three sections with a discussion period between each section. Andrew introduced his first part of the talk with the James Bourne story, where Marie calls James back to life. Paul calls us to wake up from our slumber. We like to get things done and achieve things so that we can be successful. Paul reminders us that we are all getting closer to our resurrection and asks us what are we going to do with the time we have left. Do we drift with the flow of our society? but what does that do for our Lord. The day of the return of Jesus is the only day that matters. This could be today or tomorrow or --- we don't know. A sense of urgency is needed in the church and in our lives as we do not know how much time we have. In the second part of his talk he referred to the story line in the recent film Ratatouille and the analogy of a wedge of cheese. How do we behave: the same way in public and in private, during the day and at night. Does it matter if we have a nibble at the cheese? What is the thin end of the wedge? The third section of the talk used the Tudor warship ‘The Mary Rose’ treatment process as a picture of being immersed in Jesus and the scriptures, being filled and clothed with Jesus. The ship is being immersed in wax to preserve it. We must be filled with Jesus on a daily basis, not just a weekly wash. His final question was – Do we really want to be clothed and filled with the love of Jesus Christ.

CTW Lent series talk 2 - Arise, Shine...'

The second of the 2008 CTW Lent meetings was led by Rev. Charlie Cleverley (St Aldates, Oxford) with the sub-theme of 'Arise, Shine...' which was based on Isaiah 60:1-3. He linked his talk to the beginning of John's gospel. A lot of his talk reflected his own experiences from Student times when 'Arise Shine..' changed his life and how it has changed people he knows. Our world is a dark place with many people and nations needing to have light and purpose. He challenged us on what our response is to those who are looking for purpose and values. Let us not sleep walk into chaos but be a light to our nation.

Not by bread alone

The first of the 2007 CTW Lent meetings was led by Andrew Marsden, vicar of St Sebastian’s Church in Wokingham; His theme was "Not by bread alone" based on Mathew 4:4, with a focus on wilderness experience. He asked what our understanding of a wilderness experience is and referred to some of his experiences. Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. We live our lives in tandem with God but we like to be on the front seat steering but God wants to lead us and take us where it is right to go. In the wilderness we are lost and un-safe. In the wilderness we need guidance and comfort. In the wilderness we need to embrace our Lord and let him use and guide us? Andrew reminded God works for the good of all those who love him. He reminded us that testing is key feature these days particularly in schools. In the wilderness Jesus was tested to measure his vocation as the son of God. God tested his son, a modern day SAT. Israel failed but Jesus passed the test. God tests us to know what is in our hearts. We were asked what is it that we treasure and what would be our response if we have to give them up? Andrew reminded us that fasting is a spiritual declaration of intent. To fast is to put God first. Think of Jesus and his time in the desert. He was utterly submitted to his father's will. To break the fast is to put God second. We are movers and shakers in our own strength but in Gods kingdom it does not work. In our own strength we will loose the spiritual blessing. Psalm 33:6-11 - when God speaks it happens! All words from the mouth of God are vitally important and life giving - we must be dependant on them. A key point is our ability to ask and to listen. Bring God's word into wilderness - Fear me (God) not the wild things. God may lead us into the wilderness but will not leave us there! for it.

Three Wise Men and a Baby - Saltmine Theatre play December 20th 2006

It is the middle of August already – though plans are well ahead at St. Marys vicarage for Christmas 2006. Before you know it, we are following the hilarious preparations of the vicar’s family right up to the long day itself. Will the new vicar get it right at midnight ass? Will the turkey be big enough? Will the panto ever be ready? Do we really need a camel? And will the family survive each other? A joyous mix of fun and festivity, suitable for all the family for Christmas. Written by David Robinson (Saltmine’s Creative Arts Director) and performed last Christmas to sell-out audiences and rave reviews, join Saltmine Theatre Company for a second dose of this humorous look at the nativity story.

5th April 2006 - The fourth talk in the 2006 Lent Series recording available.

TThe last speaker for the 2006 Lent Series was David Westlake from Soul Action with the theme of 'Passion for our Community'. He is also Youth Director of Tearfund. The mission of God is to tell others ‘we belong’. The Church is separate, belonging to God, but we are in our Community - separate but together. One story he focussed on was the 'Feeding of the 5000', an important event told in every Gospel. The disciples wanted Jesus to feed the crowd but Jesus said “You feed them” - It is your problem. Jesus has his role but so had the disciples. The problems are not only Jesus'. We are here to serve him and those around us and not to pass on everything to him.

David reviewed the principles of The Year of Jubilee. God was cery concerned for all people, the ultimate serving to the community.

We have reduced the range of God's interest and have created a flavour of Christianity which is not of our Lord.

In our churches are we so busy with our own activities that we have no time to serve in our Community. Do our lives exclude us from being like the disciples who were told by Jesus to 'Feed them yourselves" Let us Stop, Look, See and meet the needs of those we see, not to turn and walk on by.

Jesus’ mission in not only for us but those around us.

Who was Zennie - a story of serving with massive consequences. Who are our little boys? You will need to listen to this to understand its significance.

29th March 2006 - The third talk in the 2006 Lent Series recording available.

The third speaker in the 2006 Lent series was Baroness Caroline Cox with the theme 'Passion for the Church' (Unity). Her talk was a talk on behalf of others: those who live under total oppression and can't speak for themselves. She is a representative of the 'Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust'. The talk was a
quick tour of parts of the oppressed world - 'A light in the Darkness'. The tour took us through Burma, North Korea, Sudan, Nigeria and Indonesia. The talk was supported by a PowerPoint presentation but the audio recording on its own is powerful even without the pictures. Hear about those often forgotten by many in the west. They are as important to our Lord as we are. Our call is to pray.

22nd March 2006 - The second talk in the 2006 Lent Series recording available.

Martin Knapp's theme was 'Passion for the Gospel'.Martin Knapp, the Assistant Director of Ellel Pierrepont, part of Ellel Ministries,. He pointed out that the Gospel is the central point for teaching us about Jesus, thus if we have a desire to seek Jesus we must have a passion to read about him and what he said. Jesus was very bold in telling his community about his father and like him we are here to tell our community. The Big Idea (August 2006) is one opportunity for the Churches in Wokingham. Martin works for Ellel whose ministry is to preach the whole gospel. We must look at the whole Gospel and not cherry pick what we think may suite us. If we are to really understand Jesus we must have a passion to read about him and that comes from the gospel. We can look at an exotic car but it is useless to you unless you have the key and use it. The gospel is even better. It is useless unless we use it, feel and take hold of the power it had. Using the gospel is much more powerful and exotic that the most powerful and expensive car, thus our call to get into the Gosples

22nd January 2006 - CTW United Service for the Week of Christian Unity

The Churches Together in Wokingham (CTW) United Service for the week of Christian Unity (2006) was held at Wokingham Baptist Church on Sunday Evening 22nd January 2006. The service was led by Rev Lynn Green, the minister of the Baptist Church. The service included the commissioning of Yvette Edwards the new Wokingham Christian Schools Worker with a time of prayer, all included in this recording. The key passage was taken from Mathew 18: 15-21 - 'Where two or three are gathered in my name' developing a theme of building relationships and serving each other in the Churches and in our community. It was noted that this is being partially worked out in The Big Idea (the-big-idea.org). Praying together is such an important thing in the name of our Lord. There is no one Church that can hold all of the blessing that he has to give us.
